1990 - Biblioteca di Alessandria, Egitto, Concorso internazionale di architettura
Il simbolo del vaso della conoscenza come emblema di quella che vuole essere la rinascita della più grande biblioteca dell'antichità, un grande spazio centrale illuminato dall'alto che unifica tutti i livelli al pubblico della biblioteca, un segno urbanistico indistinguibile ed indimenticabile.
L'architettura nasce dall'interno, dall'espansione della Biblioteca, dalla nuova crescita del suo nucleo originario che crea un nuovo organismo funzionale e simbolico, che si inserisce armonicamente in un contesto ambientale di tipo mediterraneo e tenendo presente la sua vista dall'infinità del mare limitrofo.

The knowledge's symbol vase as testimony of the rebirth af the biggest library of antiquity. A huge central space, lighted up from above, unifying all public levels to show a diagram of the mankind culture. A city landmark, whose impressive shape remembers the marvelous human treasure accumulated to get a better future. The architecture borns from inside, from epansion of the library, from the new growth of its original nucleus. It's a new organism whose function becomes part of the Mediterranean environment; projected towards the infinity of the neighbouring sea.
Descrizione del progetto per la nuova Bibliotheca Alexandrina
Le finalità del progetto sono: 1) la realizzazione di un nuovo simbolo architettonico per la cultura mondiale; 2) realizzare un insieme architettonico funzionale caratterizzato semanticamente.
Per risuscitare l'antica "Bibliotheca Alexandrina" nel suo giusto splendore tra il passato (parte inferiore in ceramica con elementi decorativi rivisitati) ed il futuro (immagine tecnologica dei frangisoli metallici a orientamento solare automatico) è necessario un simbolo carico di energia come quello del "Vaso della Conoscenza".
Il simbolo progettato è come una pulsazione di energia nel contesto urbanistico. Architettonicamente si rivela allo sguardo dei fruitori e dei visitatori come un evento eccezionale. La sua forma insolita conquista un posto sicuro nella memoria dell'uomo che la vede per la prima volta.
Funzionalmente la soluzione si presenta semplice, compatta, flessibile e , di conseguenza, economica. Tutte le esigenze sono state rispettate in modo che i fruitori possono facilmente orientarsi e godere della Bibliotheca.
Nel volume centrale ( dominante ) a forma di anfora abbiamo la concentrazione dei libri; nella parte inferiore i depositi chiusi; nella parte superiore la Sala Callimaco, le sezioni della lettura e le collezioni speciali. La Sala Callimaco è caratterizzata da un ampio spazio interno luminoso, suggestivo e imponente.
A sinistra del "Vaso della Conoscenza", dal lato dell'università, c'è l'ingresso principale, lo Spazio Tolomeo, i musei, le attività culturali, la caffetteria e le scale mobili che introducono nel cuore della Bibliotheca, il tutto inserito in un tronco di piramide sormontato da una cupola e dal planetario.
Più lontano, sempre a sinistra, abbiamo l'I.S.I.S. ed i servizi complementari del centro conferenze. Su questo lato c'è anche il collegamento con il centro conferenze.
Alla destra dell'anfora, sorpassando la scenografica fontana che rappresenta la sorgente della conoscenza, abbiamo, parzialmente interrati, i servizi amministrativi, scientifici e tecnici della Bibliotheca, facilmente collegati con la Sala Callimaco mediante ascensori ed un semplice percorso.
La Bibliotheca è circondata da ampi spazi verdi che assicurano una continuità con il mare, la Cornice, la stessa Bibliotheca e l'Università; inoltre, poichè è arretrata rispetto la strada Hassan Sobhy si crea un "effetto-piazza" notevole, adeguato all'importanza della nuova costruzione.
Dal mare lo "skyline" di Alexandria si esalta nella forma pregnante della nuova "Bibliotheca Alexandrina" con la stessa forza che nell'antichità otteneva, per la sua imponenza , il meraviglioso Faro di Alexandria.
